Wheelbarrow Race

SATURDAY 15TH JUNE 2013

wheelbarrow1

One highlight of our 2012 Festival was the 37th running of the annual Kington Wheelbarrow Race.  This is now well established as a fabulous entertainment.  The speed event was combined with a fancy-dress competition for the best-dressed barrow on the Festival theme of 'KINGTON FESTIVAL OF GAMES'.

This famous opening of the Festival is the most fun sporting event of the year and the fastest pub-crawl in history! For 2013 Festival it will be run on the evening of Saturday 15th June.

So bring your kids, aunties, uncles, grannies etc because there's lots for everyone to see.  The prizes will be presented in the Place de Marines.

After the races treat yourselves to supper offered by award winning local butcher Glynn Slade Jones also at the Place de Marines or at one of several other local venues serving food and liquid refreshment.

This year the children's races will be held as part of the Gala Day celebrations on the Recreation Ground on Saturday 22nd June.

Our local Kington Fire-fighters will conduct a blanket collection during the evening.  Please bring any spare change and help support YOUR Festival!

Those of you who are entering the races, get together with your friends to start designing and building your wheelbarrow. Don't forget your costume - there are prizes for the best decorated wheelbarrow!

All wheelbarrow contestants should assemble for registration at 6.15pm ready for judging at 6.30pm at the Primary School Playground and then move up to The Square, standing by for the start.

N.B. Pedal Power is acceptable, but no motorised barrows please!

Entrants will be judged for the best fancy dress as well as the fastest time. Each team must drink half a pint of beer between them at each pub along the route. Entry for this race is £2.50 per person, minimum of two people.

THE PHILIP MEADOWS CUP

Since 1987 The Philip Meadows Cup has been presented by Mrs Meadows to the Wheelbarrow Team who, in her opinion, has given the most entertainment to the crowds during the Race.  It is always an honour to receive this cup as it was given to the Festival in memory of Mrs Meadows' son, Philip, who used to enjoy participating in the Wheelbarrow Race.

However, 2012 was the final year that the Philip Meadows cup was competed for.  Mrs Meadows and her Family feel that maybe now the time has come for a new Cup to be awarded.

The Festival Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Meadows and her family for the support which they have given to the Festival over the years.  It has been very much appreciated and has meant so much to all of us.
